Bellydance bootcamp / shimmycise bellydance fitness
Where: Namaste Studio 141 South Northwest Highway, Barrington, IL 60010
When: Thursday nights from 7:00pm - 8:00pm.
Cost: $10 a class! Discounted punchcards also available.
This class combines light strength training, aerobics and yoga with Cabaret and Fusion bellydance styles. Movements are often linked together in combinations to teach students how movements work with each other and to provide a high energy workout needed to increase strength and stamina. By including strength training and yoga students can better gain the stronger, more flexible muscles needed to properly and safely execute many advanced dance moves. Though I stress strength and fitness in my class I take a wholistic approach, meaning I also focus on building personal empowerment and self esteem. People of all sizes and genders are welcome!
My core dance style is modern Egyptian cabaret but students will learn how to blend this style with other dance styles, and their own personalities. Students will learn proper posture and stage presence along with dance movements and choreographies.
Continuing students will have a chance to learn to play finger cymbals and dance with canes, swords, veils, fans and many other props.

Class FAQ:

What should I bring to class each week?
For beginner level classes bring a notebook, something to write with, and if possible a pair of finger cymbals which I will teach you to play. They can be purchased online. I recommend the "tinkerzills" as they are smaller, quieter and less expensive. It's also the kind I use myself. You may also want to bring a scarf to tie around your hips, jingly or plain it's your call. A hip scarf is not required.
Advanced level students may also need a sword, a veil, a cane, and possibly other props.

What should I wear to class?
Wear comfortable workout attire that gives you free movement. Skirts are pretty but not recommended as we do some yoga stretches at the beginning and end of class which you'll need to be on the floor for. It also helps if I can see how yours legs are moving while you're learning the movements. Stretchy pants are a much better option. You do not have to show your belly in class if it makes you uncomfortable. You may wear a T-shirt, sports bra, or choli.

Isn't belly dancing a form of striptease?
No!!! More information can be found on the FAQ page.

Can I lose weight by belly dancing?
Belly dance can be more fun than a regular workout, help you strengthen and tone muscles as well as help you lose weight. In order to lose weight it's recommended you practice belly dance at least 20 minutes a day 3-4 days a week. Coming to class once a week won't cut it. You must either come to more than one class and/or practice at home.

How can I get the most of out belly dance classes?
-. Show up on time (a few minutes early if possible especially if it's your first class).
- Bring a notebook to class to take notes.
-. Please be respectful, and do not talk while the teacher is teaching and pay attention.
-. If you don't understand something let the teacher know, chances are several others have the same question.
-. Ask questions (if your question isn't about the move the teacher is teaching save your question for before or after class).
- Practice at home, class practice is not enough for you to become a proficient dancer.

How can I become a professional belly dancer?
Practice, Practice, Practice. As well as being a good student (see above). The passion for dance and the willingness to work hard are also very important. It's fun to dance in shows but it's also hard work.
